Type Locality and Naming

Named after the village of Kuruk, South Gissar. A.Ya. Frolenkova, Yu.S. Yurtaev, A.Kh. Chanyshev, 1966 (479, pp. 300–301). Stratotype near the village of Kuruk. The Kuruk Formation belongs to the Katkamysh Horizon (56; 446; 452).

Synonym: Kurukskaya Formation, Курукская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Composed of gray and dark-green clays and sandstones, and light-gray sandy limestones with rudists. Thickness 28–95 m.


Lithology Pattern:

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the Nilya Fm (South Gissar) or Gezan Fm (of Zarafshan district)

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the Akbulak-Cret Fm (South Gissar) or Khushikat Fm (of Zarafshan district).

Regional extent

South Gissar, Babatag Range, Zeravshan District.

Fossils

Contains ammonites – Stantonoceras sp.; marine bivalves – Exogyra decussata Goldf., Megatrigonia syrdariensis (Arkh.), Anomia cryptostriata surkhandariensis Bobk.; foraminifers – Ammobaculites flabellamminaformis N. Byk., Gaudryinella pseudoasiatica N. Byk.
